Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a common eye condition that, if not treated, can lead to vision loss. Glaucoma causes progressive damage to the optic nerve, usually accompanied by abnormally high pressure inside your eye. This pressure on your optic nerve can disrupt the images that are sent to your brain. Blind spots develop in your visual field when the optic nerve is damaged, usually starting with your peripheral (side) vision. Any vision lost usually cannot be repaired. Regular eye exams by your eye doctor can help improve your odds with an early diagnosis and treatment. Glaucoma is sometimes called the silent thief because it slowly steals your sight before you realize anything is wrong, beginning with your peripheral vision. It’s the leading cause of vision loss and blindness in the U.S.
